(July 26, 2018, Phoenix, AZ) — Steptoe Phoenix partner Karl Tilleman is prominently featured in an article in Sports Illustrated titled “The Highest Court in the Land.” The article, published July 25, discusses the basketball court that is located on the top floor of the US Supreme Court building in Washington, and the various justices and clerks who have played on it.
Tilleman, who played for the Canadian National Basketball team in two Olympics, where he faced off against Michael Jordan and set an Olympic record for the most three-point baskets in a single game, was a regular player on the Supreme Court’s upstairs court from 1992-93, when he clerked for both retired Chief Justice Warren Burger and Justice Clarence Thomas. The article describes in detail how Tilleman eventually persuaded Justice Thomas to participate in a game, which ended when Thomas tore his Achilles tendon. Twenty-five years later, a portrait of Tilleman and the justice in a walking cast hangs in Tilleman’s Steptoe office next to a picture of himself being guarded by Michael Jordan.
This marks the second time in three months that Tilleman has been featured in a magazine article recognizing his combination of legal and basketball skills. The 2018 edition of Southwest Super Lawyers, published in late April, features Tilleman in a cover story titled “King of the Long Shot: Karl Tilleman is as a sure a shot in court as he was on the court.” The profile showcases the many highlights of Tilleman’s career stretching from his early days as a record-breaking Canadian basketball star to his clerkships at the Supreme Court to his Mormon missionary work and to his courtroom success as a seasoned trial lawyer and class action litigator.
At Steptoe, Tilleman is a first-chair trial attorney whose practice focuses on complex contracts, complicated insurance coverage and bad faith, healthcare, environmental, antitrust, and class action disputes.
