Overview
(February 24, 2020, Chicago) — Steptoe associate Julie Michalski has been named a recipient of a Burton Award for distinguished law school writing. An awards ceremony honoring the authors will take place on June 8 at the Library of Congress.
Michalski is being recognized for her article in the Michigan Technology Law Review titled "Microgrids for Micro-Communities: Reducing the Energy Burden in Rural Areas." In the article published in the Fall 2019 issue, Michalski explains how states across the country can increase rural residents' access to affordable energy by considering Alaska's policies as a prototype.
The Burton Awards, established in 1999, is funded by the Burton Foundation, a non-profit, academic effort devoted to recognizing and rewarding excellence in the legal profession. The Burton Awards honors the finest accomplishments in law, including writing, reform, public service and interest, regulatory innovation, and lifetime achievements in the profession. Run in association with the Library of Congress, the Burton Awards are being presented this year by lead sponsor Law360 and co-sponsor the American Bar Association.
At Steptoe, Michalski counsels clients in navigating through complex commercial litigation and disputes. She litigates in federal and state courts in a range of matters, including product liability, toxic tort and environmental cases. Prior to private practice, Michalski gained experience in the environmental and chemicals space while working as a paralegal at The Dow Chemical Company, where she focused on commercial matters and supported the chemicals, hydrocarbons, energy, polyurethanes and catalysts groups.
