Gary Morgans Receives Pro Bono Excellence Award from Children’s Law Center

June 19, 2013

(June 19, Washington, DC) — Steptoe partner Gary Morgans has received the 2013 Pro Bono Excellence Award from the Children’s Law Center.  The occasional award recognizes high levels of skill, passion, and tenacity of individual area pro bono attorneys to Children’s Law Center clients.  Mr. Morgans was recognized for his work on behalf of families adopting neglected children in Washington.  He was presented with the award at Steptoe’s annual Public Service Awards Reception held on May 22.

The Children’s Law Center’s lawyers represent at-risk children and their care-givers in their efforts to achieve safe and stable homes, and obtain access to proper education and health care services.  As part of this effort, the Children’s Law Center refers children’s matters to Steptoe and many other area law firms on a pro bono basis.

In presenting the award to Mr. Morgans, the pro bono director of the Children’s Law Center, Nancy Drane, stated that over the past ten years, Mr. Morgans has worked on a dozen cases involving about 20 children who were referred to Steptoe for legal representation.  Several of those cases involved multiple sibling adoptions that were highly contested by the birth parents at trial.

In accepting the award on behalf of the many Steptoe lawyers who worked on those cases, Mr. Morgans noted the extreme generosity and compassion of the families who were willing to make a life-long commitment to the children, many of whom suffered from physical, mental and psychological impairments.
