Steptoe Receives Pro Bono Champion Award from Children’s Law Center

September 18, 2013

(September 18, 2013, Washington, DC) — Steptoe & Johnson LLP has received the 2013 Children’s Pro Bono Champion award from the Children’s Law Center (CLC).  The firm was presented with the award September 17 during the “Helping Children Soar” benefit held at the Kennedy Center in Washington.

CLC works to give every child in the District of Columbia a solid foundation of family, health, and education.  The organization provides free legal services to at-risk children and their families, and focuses on children who face instability as a result of abuse, neglect, or extreme parental conflict, as well as children with special education or health needs.

In presenting the award to Steptoe, CLC Executive Director Judith Sandalow commented:  “Steptoe has been a pro bono partner with Children’s Law Center for more than a decade.  During that time, they have built a specific expertise in adoption and guardianship cases, making sure that neglected children have the life-long support of loving families.  In many ways, Steptoe has been that long-term pro bono support for Children’s Law Center.  They are consistent and present, day after day and year after year.”

Ms. Sandalow continued:  “We also know that when we have a particularly complicated adoption case – one that might require extra expertise or needs immediate attention – that we can pick up the phone and call Barbara Kagan, Steptoe’s intrepid public service counsel.  Invariably, Barbara finds a colleague to handle the matter.  Case after case, countless Steptoe attorneys have stepped forward to renew and strengthen the firm’s commitment to the District’s foster children.”

Earlier this year, CLC recognized the extraordinary service of Steptoe partner Gary Morgans with the Pro Bono Excellence award.  Mr. Morgans has handled more than a dozen pro bono cases, many of them complex and contested adoptions that require extra skill and attention.  In addition, Steptoe partner Biz Scott and of counsel Erica Gerson are dedicated members of CLC’s board of directors and advisory board, respectively.
