Steptoe Receives MCCA Thomas L. Sager Award for Diversity

March 21, 2014

(March 21, 2014, Washington) – The Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) has awarded Steptoe & Johnson LLP its prestigious 2014 Thomas L. Sager Award for the Mid-Atlantic Region, noting the firm’s strong commitment to diversity.

The Sager Award is given each year to a law firm that demonstrates sustained commitment to improving the hiring, retention and promotion of minority attorneys.  The award is named for Thomas L. Sager, a MCCA board member and senior vice president and general counsel of DuPont, for his relentless commitment to increasing diversity in the legal profession — despite competing interests and mounting cynicism.  One Sager Award is given in each of MCCA’s five regions (Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South, Midwest, and West).

The awards were presented March 12 during the MCCA’s 2014 CLE Expo in Los Angeles.  Mr. Sager was on hand at the awards luncheon to deliver special remarks, and Steptoe’s Sandy Chamblee, who serves as the firm’s chief diversity partner, accepted the Mid-Atlantic award.

“We at Steptoe are very proud of this accomplishment.  It acknowledges the strides we have made and our ongoing commitment to creating and sustaining a diverse and inclusive workplace and legal profession.  We recognize that this commitment to diversity and inclusion is not a sprint but a long distance race.  Awards like this help motivate us to keep moving forward,” Ms. Chamblee said.  “It was especially an honor to receive the award from Thomas Sager himself.  He embodies the commitment and value that each of us can bring to achieving diversity and inclusion, irrespective of our diverse backgrounds and identities.”

Phil West, chair of Steptoe, added:  “I am proud of this award, our achievements, and Sandy’s hard work, and hope to use them as a springboard for Steptoe to become even more representative of the client base we serve, and the communities in which we work.”

Steptoe is dedicated to recruiting, hiring, and promoting lawyers from diverse backgrounds and weaving their experiences along with those of other attorneys into the fabric of the firm.  Steptoe's Diversity Committee reflects a broad cross-section of the firm, and includes three affinity groups:  Multicultural Attorneys at Steptoe (MAS), the Women’s Forum, and the LGBT Forum.  MultiCultural Law magazine has recognized Steptoe on its “Top 100 Law Firms for Diversity” list five times, and the National Association for Female Executives (NAFE), a division of Working Mother magazine, and Flex-Time Lawyers has named Steptoe as a "Best Law Firm for Women" four times.  In 2011, Steptoe was selected as a recipient of the inaugural “MCCA Innovator Award,” which was presented to US in-house legal departments, law firms, bar associations or legal organizations that have led the way with innovative best practices to assist diverse lawyers.
