Law360 Quotes Mitch Cheeseman on FDA Safe-Ingredient List

March 25, 2014

Steptoe managing director Mitch Cheeseman, former acting director of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Office of Food Additive Safety, was quoted in a Law360 article titled “Food Industry’s Grip on FDA Safe-Ingredient List Slipping.”  The article published on March 6, discusses how the (FDA) has allowed food makers to label additives as “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) without prior approval.  But new pressure from consumer groups and increased scrutiny from the agency is threatening to upend the controversial policy.

The Center for Food Safety sued the FDA last month, criticizing a provisional rule that since 1997 has allowed companies to bypass the approval process the agency requires for other food additives and freely market their use of ‘GRAS’ ingredients.

“Consumer groups have made a pretty pointed effort to tell a particular story: that this program is allowing harmful chemicals into the mix and that FDA’s oversight is not sufficient,” says Dr. Cheeseman.
