Steptoe Expands IP Practice in New York with Patent Litigator John Molenda

July 16, 2014

(July 16, 2014, New York) — Steptoe & Johnson LLP is expanding its national intellectual property capabilities with the arrival of patent litigator John Molenda in New York.  Dr. Molenda, who has a strong life sciences background and holds a doctorate in chemistry, will serve as co-chair of Steptoe’s Healthcare & Life Sciences industry team and lead the growth of Steptoe’s IP practice in New York.

Dr. Molenda’s practice focuses on patent litigation at the district court and appellate levels, as well as post-grant proceedings before the US Patent and Trademark Office.  He has represented clients across technologies, including biotherapeutics (biologics), pharmaceuticals (Hatch-Waxman), medical devices, computer software, genetically modified plants, polymers, and automotive parts.  More recently, his practice has focused on the cutting-edge field of biologics litigation, including pre-litigation counseling and strategy concerning application of the Biologics Act to biotherapeutic development programs.

In welcoming Dr. Molenda, Steptoe Chair Phil West commented:  “John is a talented and energetic patent litigator who has distinguished himself with his strong technical background and his considerable knowledge and skills in biotech patent litigation.  His arrival will enhance our current team of life sciences patent lawyers and litigators in our Chicago and Washington offices, and will spearhead the growth of our IP practice in New York.”

“Steptoe provides a full range of intellectual property services and is deeply committed to the growth of its IP practice, particularly in the life sciences,” said Dr. Molenda.  “Steptoe has great litigators and strong technical depth that will enable me to fully serve the clients I represent.”

Steptoe’s Intellectual Property Group enforces, protects, and develops the intellectual property rights and assets of clients in a wide range of industries.  Its range of services includes IP litigation, Section 337 litigation, patent prosecution, and trademark and copyright protection.  Over the past decade, the group has grown substantially with an expansion that has been strategic, aimed at giving Steptoe deep expertise in several areas that fit well with the firm’s traditional strengths.  In January of this year, the group expanded into northern California, where Steptoe opened an office in Palo Alto.

Dr. Molenda received his bachelor of science, cum laude, with honors in the College of Arts and Science, in chemistry and history from Vanderbilt University, where he later earned both a master’s degree and doctorate in chemistry.  He completed post-doctoral research in biochemistry at New York University, and then earned his law degree from the University of Michigan.  He clerked on the Federal Circuit for the Honorable Alan D. Lourie.
