Law360 Names Steptoe a ‘Pro Bono Firm of 2014’

October 27, 2014

Law360 has named Steptoe a “Pro Bono Firm of 2014.”  In a profile published on October 24, the editors highlight several matters that earned the firm a spot on the list including exonerating a man wrongly imprisoned for murder for nearly 20 years, and helping to score a US Supreme Court victory for opponents of Arizona’s strict voter ID laws.  The profile also discusses a win secured by Steptoe in the high court’s first Taser case.

Jim Rocap, who chairs Steptoe’s pro bono committee, tells Law360 that although the firm does not require its lawyers to work in public interest cases, Steptoe is committed to marshaling its talent to correct large-scale injustices and help individuals in need.

“We’re always pushing people to move up,” Mr. Rocap says.  “I tell lawyers, ‘If you’ve done 100 hours, try 200.  If you’ve done 200, try 300.'  It feels pretty good.”
