Washington Post Quotes Michael Vatis on Government Access to Encrypted Data

April 13, 2015

Michael Vatis was quoted in a Washington Post article titled “As Encryption Spreads, US Grapples with Clash Between Privacy, Security.”  The article, published on April 10, discusses the highly contentious issue of whether tech companies should be obliged to guarantee government access to encrypted data on smartphones and other digital devices without compromising the security of law-abiding customers.

Mr. Vatis says:  “There is zero chance of any domestic restrictions on encryption absent a catastrophic event which clearly could have been stopped if the government had been able to break some encryption.  That is the only way I could even imagine any restriction on encryption being passed by Congress.”
