Overview
The Washington Post quoted Steptoe partner Mike Miller in an article titled “While FIFA Continues Reform Effort, US Criminal Probe Enters New Phase.” The article, published July 21, discusses the six remaining FIFA officials in Switzerland who are still fighting extradition to the United States. According to the article, Switzerland has historically been reluctant to extradite people charged with fiscal crimes to America.
Mr. Miller says: “Most extraditions take time anyway, but the Swiss-US extradition process is just more complicated and cumbersome than many of the agreements that the US enjoys with other countries. Historically, the Swiss, with their approach to bank secrecy, have had a view that they wanted to be a country that operated independent of the long arm of US law.”
