Overview
(May 20, 2016, Washington, DC) — Steptoe partner George Grandison received the Hall of Fame Award at Ayuda’s 43rd anniversary event for helping low-income immigrants in the community access justice and find the means to restore their lives. Ayuda, a nonprofit organization that provides legal, social, and language access services to low-income immigrants in the region, held the event at the Microsoft Innovation & Policy Center in downtown Washington, DC on May 18.
The Hall of Fame Award recognizes distinguished individuals who have made significant achievements and contributions to Ayuda and who have been dedicated supporters of Ayuda for more than a decade. The annual anniversary event celebrates all immigrants in the Washington metropolitan area and draws more than 200 community leaders, pro bono counsels, business leaders, and local leaders.
Since 2007, Mr. Grandison has worked on coordinating Steptoe's signature pro bono project, Action for Children of Trafficking, to assist immigrant children and young adults who are victims of human trafficking, violent crime, abuse or neglect or who are threatened with persecution in their home country. In this program, Steptoe, on average, has 50 to 60 active representations of immigrant children and young adults being handled on a pro bono basis by attorneys firm wide. As part of this project, Mr. Grandison and other Steptoe lawyers also provide pro bono legal advice and assistance to the Women's Refugee Commission in its work in advocating for changes in the law and in administrative and enforcement procedures to protect the interests of immigrant children and families.
In 2012, The National Law Journal named Mr. Grandison a “Champion” for his work upholding the legal profession’s core values through public service, pro bono efforts and advocacy for civil liberties.
