Overview
The New Food Economy quoted Sarah Gordon in a December 5 article titled “The Supreme Court Case on Same-Sex Wedding Cakes Hinges on a Single Question: Is Food Art?” The article discusses how the US Supreme Court case Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission could have a major impact on LGBTQ rights and the food industry at large.
Ms. Gordon says, “The Supreme Court decided long ago that businesses that are open to the public should be open to everyone.” In October, Ms. Gordon, along with Steptoe partner Jon Sallet and associate Laura Lane-Steele, filed an amicus brief signed by 37 companies in support of the defendants. Ms. Gordon says that those companies don’t want their employees discriminated against in their communities. Nor do they want to have to sort through the headache of figuring out what, in a post-cake world, would constitute “expressive conduct.”
