Alex Melia assists companies in complying with the UK Bribery Act, the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), related transnational anti-bribery regimes, and anti-money laundering legislation. She has assisted in conducting numerous internal investigations, compliance audits, and risk assessments for clients in Eastern and Western Europe, Asia and the Middle East across a wide range of industries, including the oil and gas, pharmaceutical, financial services, technology, consumer product and manufacturing industries.

Ms. Melia has experience advising clients on the design, implementation, and evaluation of global compliance programs. She also helps clients develop effective anti-corruption compliance strategies, including establishing internal policies and procedures, conducting mergers and acquisitions due diligence, and devising post-merger compliance integration plans.

Ms. Melia also has gained valuable in-house experience, completing a year-long secondment to a client acting in the capacity of a de-facto Chief Compliance Officer.

In the field of white-collar criminal defense, Ms. Melia has represented clients in cases arising out of the financial crisis.

Ms. Melia has handled a variety of civil litigation matters involving complex factual and legal issues before both the English High Court and the European Court of Human Rights. She also has experience of successfully resolving commercial arbitration proceedings under the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to her advisory work, she regularly writes articles and commentary pieces for compliance related publications and has experience delivering training to clients on compliance topics.

Prior to joining Steptoe, Ms. Melia practiced as a Solicitor in the Anti-Corruption and Dispute Resolution groups of a US law firm’s London office.
