Alfred M. Mamlet is recognized by his peers as a leading telecommunications lawyer in Chambers USA, The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers, The Legal 500, PLC Which Lawyer?, and An International Who's Who of Telecom Lawyers.  Mr. Mamlet provides value-added strategic advice to telecommunications and other technology companies on regulatory, litigation – particularly in telecommunications and intellectual property disputes – and transactional matters.

Mr. Mamlet is also the firm’s Management Committee member with responsibility for lateral growth and strategic initiatives, and co-chairs the Lateral Hiring and Integration Committee.

Regulation

Mr. Mamlet provides regulatory advice on international, satellite, wireless, common carrier, and Internet matters.  At the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), he regularly represents leading telecommunications companies in rulemakings, merger approvals, spectrum allocations, intercarrier compensation, universal service, and licensing proceedings.  Most recently, in the FCC’s rulemaking regarding in-flight use of mobile phones, Mr. Mamlet has been advising OnAir, one of the world’s leading integrators for in-flight connectivity.

Mr. Mamlet also focuses on Internet matters and other issues involving the convergence of telecommunications and computer technologies.  He counsels major telecommunications and Internet companies on domestic and international telecommunications regulation of Internet services, including Internet telephony, the regulation of Internet voice and video services, and broadband issues.

In addition to FCC proceedings, Mr. Mamlet often handles telecommunications matters before Congress, the Executive Office of the President, the US Trade Representative, and the Departments of Commerce, State, Justice, Treasury, and Defense.

Telecom and IP Disputes

Mr. Mamlet frequently handles telecommunications and intellectual property disputes in state and federal courts, the FCC, State PUCs, and international arbitrations.  Recent representative first chair matters include:

  • Jury trial victory in GTT v. ARTEL (VA 2013), defeated all 29 of plaintiff’s claims, prevailed on fraud and contract damages, awarded punitive damages and 95% of requested attorney’s fees
  • Represented multiple satellite companies prevailing after evidentiary hearing in LCIA arbitration and awarded attorney’s fees 
  • Prevailed on motion to dismiss in GTT v. CMC (E.D. VA 2014)
  • Obtained favorable settlement of patent litigation for Inmarsat in Advanced Media Networks v. Inmarsat, et. al. (S.D. NY) 
  • Represented VeriSign in litigation against Qwest over SS7 charges in eight states, designing a favorable settlement that covered more than 50 different parties  
  • Defeated a preliminary injunction motion in a trade secrets case, following evidentiary hearing, in StarTrak v. Satamatics Ltd., et al. (D. NJ).
  • Resolved copyright litigation through prompt and favorable settlement for Stratos in Stratos v. Telenor (D. MD)
  • Represented Xwave in a software trade secrets matter, resolved through nominal settlement in SundRy v. Xwave of New England (E.D. VA)

Transactions

Mr. Mamlet provides strategic advice and negotiates a wide range of transactional agreements for domestic and international telecommunications and software companies.  He has served as lead counsel on more than twenty acquisitions of wireless, common carrier, satellite, and software companies.  The recent acquisition of Globe Wireless for Inmarsat was recognized by the M&A Advisor as a “Corporate/Strategic Acquisition of the Year” for 2013.

In addition, Mr. Mamlet assists telecommunications companies on a variety of financings, including public equity and debt offerings, private placements, and commercial loans.  Mr. Mamlet represents major wireless and satellite companies in forming joint ventures and other strategic alliances, and also advises telecommunications clients on an array of commercial agreements.
