Dr. Anna Gergely is based in Steptoe’s Brussels office, where, in a role equivalent to partner, she is director EHS regulatory and a member of the Environment and Life Sciences Group.  Dr. Gergely holds a PhD in analytical chemistry and quantum chemistry and is a registered European patent attorney.

Legal 500 EMEA has noted she “has the rare ability to give clients not only legal advice, but also a scientific interpretation of complex REACH matters,” noting that her “excellent scientific background” is a “great asset.”

Dr. Gergely is particularly experienced in providing comprehensive capabilities for companies seeking compliance strategies that cover the full range of their technical and legal needs in areas such as:

  •  Chemicals (biocides, agro-biotechnology, cosmetics), REACH and CLP
  •  Food and feed and food contact materials (packaging and marketing claims and hygiene rules)
  •  Regulation of medical devices and a range of consumer and industrial products
  •  Nanotechnologies.  Dr. Gergely focuses on nanotechnologies as related to a broad spectrum of industrial sectors.  Her involvement in this field ranges from scientific and patent considerations to issues of corporate regulatory compliance and regulatory governance.

Dr. Gergely chairs the Nanotechnologies Task Force of AmCham EU and the Regulation Working Group of NANOfutures, a flagship project sponsored by the European Commission.  She is the author and co-author of several articles and book chapters discussing the regulatory oversight of the different applications of nanotechnologies.  Between 2007 and 2012 she had been appointed as a member of the Scientific and Technical Council of the International Risk Governance Council, an independent organization whose purpose is to help the understanding and management of emerging global risks that have impacts on human health and safety, the environment, the economy and society at large.

Before joining Steptoe, Dr. Gergely spent nearly 15 years as scientific and regulatory advisor at other international law firms.  Prior to that, she had an academic research career followed by an in-house technical position at the Monsanto Chemical Company in Belgium.  With almost 20 years of experience as a regulatory advisor, Dr. Gergely has successfully combined her academic and industry backgrounds to develop in-depth technical and legal knowledge of relevant regulatory areas.
