Timothy A. Work, an associate in Steptoe's Washington office, advises clients based in the US and abroad in matters involving financial and securities regulation, as well as government and commercial litigation.  He is also active in Steptoe’s ongoing pro bono efforts.

Financial and Securities Regulation

Mr. Work represents clients in SEC enforcement and private securities litigation matters involving the Securities Act, Securities Exchange Act, Investment Advisers Act, and Investment Company Act.  The intense media coverage generated by some of these matters has required Mr. Work, as part of Steptoe’s team, to provide advice in rapidly shifting situations, whether in preparing clients for testimony before the SEC, interacting with Division of Enforcement attorneys, or carefully reacting to press reports that could affect clients’ interests.  In both financial and non-financial matters where clients have been injured or threatened by private parties, Mr. Work has had a significant role assisting Steptoe’s team in building partnerships with law enforcement officials to investigate and prosecute criminal wrongdoing.

Mr. Work also has experience managing simultaneous cross-border internal investigations of a multinational financial services client.  Working with local co-counsel, he directed multi-lingual document review teams, liaised with client representatives and contractors, and conducted witness interviews in English and German.

Government and Commercial Litigation

Mr. Work represents clients in litigation against state and federal government agencies.  This work includes helping to secure a preliminary injunction to halt extraordinary EPA action against Steptoe’s client and seeking a fair permitting process for the client’s natural resources project.  He also has an extensive commercial litigation practice that includes helping a financial services client to challenge class-action attorney’s fees, advising energy and aeronautics clients on both sides of contractual breach matters, and providing litigation options to a manufacturing client whose business partner had caused products liability issues.

Pro Bono

Mr. Work maintains an active pro bono practice.  He recently assisted a client in appealing the dismissal of his prisoner abuse claim and helped another seek discharge of student loans for a school that was found to have violated numerous state educational requirements.

Prior to joining Steptoe, Mr. Work was an associate at an international law firm in Germany, where he focused on corporate law and capital markets transactions.  He teaches fundamentals of US law and legal writing at Georgetown University Law Center.
