Dr. Anna Gergely co-authored a chapter in a book titled Nanotechnologies in Food: Edition 2. The chapter named “Infinitesimal Ingredients: An Analysis of the Regulatory Dimensions of Nanotechnologies in Foods and Food Contact Materials,” discusses how progress in the increased development and use of nanotechnologies and nanomaterials in foods and food contact materials has driven regulatory agencies to step up their activities. In light of this evolution, the chapter analyses existing regulatory frameworks in selected jurisdictions (the EU, US, Australia and New Zealand) and evaluates the progress of developing evidence-based regulations to support the safety assessment, pre-market authorization and consumer information concerning nanomaterials used in food production and storage. The chapter draws the conclusion that, as the technology matures, the supporting regulatory framework may need to be revisited.
