Business Crimes Bulletin featured an article written by Steptoe partner Jason Weinstein in its March 2014 edition.  The article, titled “Forced Decryption in Government Investigations,” discusses the legal issues raised when prosecutors and agents try to compel suspects to decrypt computers and other digital devices seized during criminal investigations.  Mr. Weinstein provides perspective from the Department of Justice side, where he previously served as a deputy assistant attorney general, as well as the defense side, in analyzing these issues.   He further provides a few takeaways on the first cases in this emerging area of law.
