Daily Tax Update - September 20, 2013: House Passes Continuing Resolution to Defund Health Care Act

THE DAILY TAX UPDATE WILL BE PUBLISHED WHEN CONGRESS RETURNS ON SEPTEMBER 25

House Passes Continuing Resolution to Defund Health Care Act:  Today, the House passed a continuing resolution to fund the government through mid-December and defund the Affordable Care Act.  The continuing resolution would fund the federal government at current sequester levels of $986.3 billion through December 15.  The continuing resolution passed 230-189 mostly along party lines.  The government funding bill with the provision to defund the health care act won’t be accepted by the Senate.  Once the Senate acts on its own version of a continuing resolution next week, the House will have just a few days to act before a government shutdown could occur on October 1.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said, “Republicans are simply postponing for a few days the inevitable choice they must face:  pass a clean bill to fund the government, or force a shutdown.  I have said it before but it seems to bear repeating:  The Senate will not pass any bill that defunds or delays Obamacare. … Democrats stand ready to work with reasonable people who want to improve it, but Republican attempts to take an entire law hostage simply to appease the tea party anarchists are outrageous, irresponsible and futile.”
