Daily Tax Update - October 4, 2013: President Obama on Shutdown: "No One is Winning"

President Obama on Shutdown: "No One is Winning" Today, President Obama said that as long as federal workers are out of work, “no one is winning.”  The President said that Republicans could "right now" end the shutdown and that it "could be over today."  The President also said that there were votes for a clean government funding bill in the House.  Obama added, “If Speaker Boehner will simply allow that vote to take place, we can end this shutdown. . . . I've said I'm happy to have negotiations on a whole range of issues, but we can't do it with a gun held to the head of the American people.”

House Speaker John Boehner said, “This isn’t some . . . game.”  Boehner added, “The American people don't want their government shut down, and neither do I.  All we're asking for is to sit down and talk to each other like the American people expect us to."

Today, by a vote of 223-184, House Republicans defeated a procedural move by Democrats to try to take up a clean continuing resolution.
