Daily Tax Update - October 10, 2013: White House and House Republicans Fail to Reach a Deal to End Shutdown

White House and House Republicans Fail to Reach a Deal to End Shutdown:  After a meeting tonight at the White House between President Obama and House Republicans,  no agreement was reached to end the impasse over the government shutdown.  However, Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp described the talks as “constructive.”

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said, “We had a useful meeting.  We agreed to continue discussions. We will continue tonight and hopefully we will have a clearer path forward.”  Cantor added, “The takeaway from the meeting is our teams are going to be talking further tonight.  We'll have more discussion.  We'll come back to have more discussion and the president said he would go and talk with the administration folks and hopefully we can see a way forward after that."

The White House said that President Obama looked forward "to making continued progress with members on both sides of the aisle."  Earlier today, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said that the White House was “likely” to sign a six-week debt ceiling hike.
