Overview
In its December 2021 – January 2022 issue, FISC published a case study by Steptoe lawyers Ed Krauland, Brian Heberlig, Nicholas Silverman and Bruce Bishop in an article titled "Case Study and Lessons Learnt: The Ali Sadr Case." The prosecution of Ali Sadr Hashemi Nejad turned on whether payments from one European bank to another, and from a South American company to a European company, constituted an export of services from the US to Iran – as prosecutors argued. The reality is: it's complicated, and Ali Sadr would be exonerated two years after his initial conviction for violations of the Iran sanctions regulations. Steptoe lawyers who represented Ali Sadr explore the case and its repercussions for sanctions enforcement in the US.
