Toni Ianniello is a litigation partner in the Washington office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP and heads the Insurance practice group, which numbers over 70 lawyers.  She has extensive experience in a broad range of civil and criminal cases.

Civil Litigation
For more than 20 years, Ms. Ianniello has handled a wide array of litigation matters, serving as lead counsel in numerous complex insurance coverage disputes relating to CGL, property, errors and omissions, and D&O policies, as well as surety and fidelity bonds, and other specialty insurance products.  She currently is involved in numerous high-profile insurance coverage matters involving major pharmaceutical products liability claims, toxic tort claims, and asbestos liability, construction defects, and bad-faith claims.  She also has significant experience in insurance and reinsurance coverage arbitrations, both in the United States and overseas.

Ms. Ianniello also advises insurers and reinsurers on coverage issues, and has resolved hundreds of matters, large and small, through mediation or other alternative dispute resolution procedures.  She regularly defends attorneys and directors and officers in suits alleging negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, conflicts of interest, securities fraud, and RICO.  She also represents attorneys and law firms in disciplinary matters.

Criminal Litigation
In addition to her civil litigation background, Ms. Ianniello has substantial experience in white-collar criminal work.  She has represented both individuals and corporations in major grand jury investigations involving allegations of government procurement fraud, securities, tax and bank fraud, criminal food and drug violations, and public corruption.  She served as an Associate Counsel in the Office of Independent Counsel Lawrence Walsh (Iran-Contra) during 1989-90, working on the prosecution team which brought perjury charges against Richard Secord.

Professional Activities
Ms. Ianniello currently is an elected member of the Board of Governors of the District of Columbia Bar.  She served as General Counsel to the DC Bar from 1998-2000. She has extensive experience as a mediator both in Federal Court and DC Superior Court.  Ms. Ianniello is a frequent speaker on professional liability issues at the meetings of the ABA Standing Committee on Lawyers' Professional Liability, as well as other forums.

Prior to her arrival at Steptoe & Johnson LLP in 1982, Ms. Ianniello served as law clerk to Chief Judge James L. Latchum, US District Court for the District of Delaware.  From 1975 to 1978, she served as an assistant to Senator Jacob K. Javits on his foreign policy staff.
