Overview
Bloomberg BNA’s Daily Report for Executives quoted Steptoe Chair Phil West in an article titled “Trump to Nominate Michael Desmond to Top IRS Lawyer Post.” The article, published March 5, discusses President Trump’s plans to appoint California tax lawyer Michael J. Desmond to serve as the chief counsel for the IRS and the assistant general counsel in the Treasury Department.
Mr. West, a former Treasury international tax counsel who's worked with Desmond in both his private and public-sector roles, says that Desmond's office is faced with a broad array of other tasks, even as tax reform work goes forward. Desmond has “sound judgment, broad knowledge of the tax law, and a steady hand.” That's all going to be important as Desmond steers IRS efforts on not just guidance, but on audits, compliance and litigation efforts in the coming years, Mr. West says.
