(July 19, 2021, Washington, DC) — Steptoe partner Shannen Coffin has been recognized by Best Buddies International for being the 2021 top individual fundraiser for Friendship Walks nationwide. Coffin has served for several years as a member of the Capital Region advisory board for Best Buddies, and has chaired the Capital Region’s Friendship Walk 5K on the National Mall multiple times with the support of Team Steptoe. Over the past six years, he has personally raised more than $200 thousand and has spearheaded Best Buddies’ effort to raise close to $1.5 million for local programs.
Best Buddies is the world’s largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The Best Buddies Friendship Walk is the number one walk in the country raising awareness and funds to support individuals with IDD. During Coffin’s tenure as walk chair, Steptoe has been a sponsor of the DC-Virginia Friendship Walk multiple times. More information on the DC-Virginia chapter can be found at Best Buddies.
In a welcome video for the Best Buddies Leadership Conference aired on July 15, Stuart Kaul, senior director of the Friendship Walks for Best Buddies International, discussed the challenges the program has faced during the pandemic. He said the Friendship programs had to quickly adapt to a virtual world to help the “buddies” from feeling social isolation.
In recognizing Coffin, Kaul praised him as an “amazing fundraiser, donor, and all around great guy.”
