Overview
(November 3, 2026, Los Angeles) – Steptoe LLP has been named a 2026 Pro Bono Honoree by Public Counsel. Steptoe was recognized for its partnership in litigation protecting Los Angeles’s ability to shape its own response to homelessness, helping ensure that critical resources and services remain responsive to the needs of local communities. Public Counsel will host an in-person awards ceremony in January 2027.
Together with Public Counsel and the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, Steptoe represents the Los Angeles Continuum of Care (LA CoC), a body of local stakeholders established by Congress to coordinate the region’s homeless response system under federal law. In August 2026, LA CoC intervened in litigation involving the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), with the goal of providing the thousands of individuals, families, veterans, and people with disabilities who depend on this funding with a voice in the case.
Public Counsel is a nonprofit public interest law firm dedicated to advancing civil rights and providing comprehensive legal advocacy. "To our honorees and every member of our pro bono community, thank you for the generosity, dedication, and care you bring to this work," said Matt Kugizaki, Director of Pro Bono at Public Counsel.
The Steptoe team representing LA CoC includes partner Robyn Crowther and associates Abigail Orozco and Andrea Guzman.
