Overview
(September 3, 2025, Washington, DC) – Steptoe LLP is pleased to announce that Matt Galvin, a nationally recognized leader in AI-powered investigations and compliance innovation, has joined the firm as a partner in its Investigations, White-Collar and Compliance (IWC) practice.
Matt served as Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer at AB InBev, where he led the development of BrewRIGHT, a groundbreaking global compliance analytics platform that leveraged AI and machine learning to detect risk patterns and drive proactive compliance. He also co-founded Gentic Global Advisors PLLC and Transforming Legal, where he advised boards, regulators, and executives across more than 30 jurisdictions on leveraging data and AI to build resilient, high-integrity organizations.
While at the US Department of Justice (DOJ), Matt played a pivotal role as Counsel for Compliance and Data Analytics in designing and deploying AI and other data-driven systems that transformed how the DOJ developed and conducted white-collar investigations while also bringing a senior in-house perspective and technological acumen to enforcement and compliance policy. His arrival strengthens Steptoe's position at the forefront of legal-tech integration, especially as international regulatory scrutiny and expectations around corporate compliance intensify amid rapid technological innovation.
Matt commands a rare combination of public service, global corporate leadership, and legal and technological innovation. He pioneered the adoption of AI and data analytics both in-house and at the DOJ, where he helped develop tools that enhanced the Department's ability to assess compliance programs, guide monitorships, and conduct data-driven investigations. His work laid the foundation for a more predictive and transparent approach to enforcement.
"Matt's arrival reflects our strategic positioning to deliver unsurpassed compliance advice alongside our traditional strengths in investigations and litigation," said firm chair Gwen Renigar. "His experience at the intersection of enforcement, compliance, and technology allows us to meet clients' demand for counsel who understand both the legal and technological dimensions of compliance."
Matt joins a growing roster of high-profile lateral hires who reflect Steptoe's commitment to innovation across practices. Recent additions include Christian Auty, Ross Weingarten, Michel Paradis, Jonathan Drimmer, Yousuf Aftab, Claire Rajan, Cáitrín McKiernan, Sandra Hanna, and others who bring deep proficiency in AI, enforcement, and/or global risk.
"I'm thrilled to join Steptoe at a time when the firm is integrating legal excellence with technological innovation," said Matt. "I'm excited to collaborate with such a talented team and help clients build AI-enabled, data-driven compliance programs that stand up to regulatory scrutiny, future-proof their operations, and improve the impact and relevance of in-house legal teams."
Steptoe's award-winning IWC group is recognized for its work in white-collar criminal defense, internal and independent investigations, and compliance counseling. The firm is a leader in emerging areas such as AI governance, compliance analytics, and cryptocurrency, advising Fortune 500 companies across global markets.
Matt is fluent in Mandarin and has held academic and advisory roles with institutions including MIT, Harvard Business School, Sorbonne Law School, Fordham Law, and the OECD's anti-bribery advisory group. In June 2025, he was recognized as one of the Top 20 Legal Intrapreneurs of the Past Two Decades by the Financial Times Innovative Lawyers. Matt received his JD from Georgetown University and a BA in Chinese Studies from Boston University.
