Overview
(October 12, 2018, Washington, DC) — Steptoe partner John O'Connor has been appointed to the District of Columbia Access to Justice Commission's high volume courts subcommittee. O'Connor was selected due to his extensive pro bono work in the landlord tenant court. The DC Access to Justice Commission was created by the DC Court of Appeals in 2005 to help improve the ability of low– and moderate–income residents to access the civil justice system. The commission is also responsible for raising the profile of the need for equal access to justice in the community.
O'Connor leads Steptoe's participation in the District of Columbia Housing Right to Counsel Project, in which he and other Steptoe lawyers provide pro bono representation to tenants facing eviction from subsidized housing. In 2017, O'Connor received the Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award for his work on the DC Housing Right to Counsel Project, an initiative in which 14 Washington law firms provided pro bono counsel to tenants facing eviction in DC Superior Court’s Landlord Tenant Branch.
