Overview
Global Data Review quoted Charles-Albert Helleputte in a March 8 article titled, "Sanctions breed uncertainty for data."
The article discusses the impact the wave of international sanctions against Russia are having on data and cloud providers, specifically what exactly data-rich companies should be doing, and how service providers should approach the challenge of disentangling themselves from prohibited entities.
Helleputte, told GDR, "I don't think the [sanctions] toolbox has been designed to fit with data flows as part of it." He explained, "If you hit the data that entities are holding, if you freeze access to their data outside of their own country … of course it would be effective probably because you really preclude them from doing any kind of business, but I’m not sure on which legal grounds you would be able to do that."
