Overview
The United States and the United Nations Security Council have enacted new sanctions against North Korea (DPRK) in response to arms tests it has conducted in recent months. Together, the sanctions represent the toughest restrictions yet on dealings with the DPRK. In February, President Obama signed the North Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act of 2016 which includes provisions that block the Government of North Korea and the Workers’ Party of Korea, enhance cargo inspections, increase restrictions on the financial sector, and impose new sanctions targeting non-US persons that engage in certain dealings with North Korea. For its part, the Security Council passed Resolution 2270 on March 2, imposing stringent obligations on member states in an effort to limit trade with the DPRK.
