Overview
(August 12, 2020, Washington, DC) — Law360 has named Steptoe partner Peter Denton a Rising Star in Transportation. The Rising Stars list recognizes individuals under 40 whose legal accomplishments belie their age. The 2020 Law360 Rising Stars list was selected by a team of editors who carefully reviewed more than 1,300 submissions.
In a profile published August 11, the editors write that Denton has "spent his legal career advising major clients in the niche railroad industry, recently guiding one of the world's largest alternative asset managers to acquire a public short line railroad holding company for $8.4 billion, one of the largest railroad industry transactions in recent history."
At Steptoe, Denton advises railroads and other railroad industry clients on various regulatory and legislative issues and disputes, business transactions, arbitrations and court actions before the Surface Transportation Board (STB), and appeals in federal court. Denton also manages an active infrastructure practice for which he advises clients on innovative financing, delivery and procurement methods to develop path-breaking public-private partnership infrastructure projects, including major railroad and mass transit projects.
In describing a notable case he's worked on, Denton pointed to his more recent work with financial institutions and financial infrastructure funds on transactions with railroad companies. He represented Brookfield Asset Management and sovereign wealth fund GIC Pte. Ltd., formerly known as Government of Singapore Investment Corp., in their take-private acquisition of Genesee & Wyoming Inc., an American short line railroad holding company with more than 16,000 miles of track operating in North America, Europe and Australia.
"It just was a really fascinating deal, really high stakes," Denton said. "And complicated from a regulatory perspective."
