(August 14, 2020, New York) — Law360 has named Steptoe partner Vishal Gupta a Rising Star in Life Sciences. The Rising Stars list recognizes individuals under 40 whose legal accomplishments belie their age. The 2020 Law360 Rising Stars list was selected by a team of editors who carefully reviewed more than 1,300 submissions.
In a profile published August 12, the editors cite Gupta's success for French drugmaker Sanofi last year in upending a jury verdict and invalidating patents related to rival Amgen Inc.'s cholesterol-lowering drug Repatha, as among the reasons he was selected for the list. The profile also highlights the high-stakes patent litigation work Gupta is doing for Apotex in defending the drugmaker's generic version of Celegne's blockbuster cancer medication Revlimid.
At Steptoe, Gupta focuses on complex patent litigation in a range of life sciences, handling technologies related to biologics and pharmaceuticals. He litigates in federal courts throughout the country and has handled numerous cases and trials related to blockbuster pharmaceuticals and biologics. He also has extensive experience in strategic counseling, due diligence, licensing, technology transactions, opinions, pre-suit investigations, and settlement agreements/negotiations.
Gupta said he is motivated by his desire to fight for his clients and procure the best possible result for them. He added that he listens intently to their needs and strategic goals and tries to deliver on them, whether through litigation, transactions or counseling. "I work hand-in-hand with them to achieve their goals," Gupta said.
Gupta noted that he has experience representing clients on both the brand name and generic side of pharmaceutical patent battles. He also said he's equally comfortable strategizing for litigation and for potential settlements, should such deals be appropriate.
"I've been fortunate to have deep experience in both sides," Gupta said. "It's very helpful from a strategic perspective."
