Law360 quoted Wendy Wysong in a January 5 article titled "Trump, Iran Trade Barbs As US Prepares For New Admin." The article discusses how President-elect Biden stands to inherit a US-Iran relationship much different than the one he left behind following the signing of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a multilateral agreement from 2015 that eased sanctions on Iran in exchange for guarantees that it was not pursuing a nuclear weapons program.
Wysong, managing partner of Steptoe's Hong Kong office and co-chair of the firm's Investigations and White-Collar Defense group, says while both countries appear to be moving further from Biden's aspirations of discourse, the Trump administration's recent escalations may hold a hidden benefit for the incoming administration.
"In some respects it sort of provides the Biden administration more leverage or ammunition, things they can give up to bring Iran back to the table for the JCPOA and other things that the new administration wants that the Trump administration may not have wanted to be a part of. It's a little bit self-defeating," Wysong says.
