(September 10, 2025, Washington, DC) – Steptoe LLP is proud to announce that Lisa Zarlenga, head of the firm's Tax Policy Practice, has been named Chair-Elect of the American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Taxation. Her term as Chair-Elect will run through August 2026, after which she will assume the role of Chair.
The ABA Section of Taxation is the largest professional organization of tax lawyers in the country, serving more than 11,000 members ranging from seasoned practitioners to law students. The Section plays a vital role in shaping tax policy, educating professionals, and promoting pro bono service and public interest initiatives. Lisa brings a wealth of experience to this leadership role. Prior to rejoining Steptoe, she served as Tax Legislative Counsel at the US Treasury Department's Office of Tax Policy, where she advised on a broad range of domestic tax issues and oversaw the development of regulations and administrative guidance. At Steptoe, she helps clients navigate complex tax policy and regulatory landscapes, with a practice that spans corporate transactions, energy tax credits, digital assets, and qualified opportunity zones. Lisa is also co-editor and co-author of Taxation of Crypto Assets, a comparative study of tax regimes across 39 countries.
In a recent interview with Law360, Lisa shared her vision for the Section’s future, emphasizing her commitment to expanding membership, particularly among younger attorneys, and enhancing the Section's role in supporting government agencies through targeted feedback and continuing legal education. She also reflected on how the ABA Tax Section has shaped her career, from her early days at Steptoe to her leadership roles in government and private practice.
