Overview
CNBC and Law.com's weekly newsletter "In-House" quoted Brigida Benitez in articles discussing the uproar over Papa John's founder and former chairman John Schnatter's apparent racist comments and the ensuing leadership battle at the pizza chain. Benitez, who was named one of the Top 100 Women in Investigations by Global Investigations Review and has conducted numerous internal investigations and investigations before enforcement agencies relating to a variety of sensitive and business-critical issues, was sought for commentary on what law departments can learn from the ordeal.
Benitez tells Law.com that after a crisis it's crucial for a company to get a handle on the facts of the situation ASAP by conducting an independent internal investigation. "A company is in the best position to carry that out effectively and efficiently when it already has a game plan in advance – in the form of policies and procedures – and can quickly deploy a team to triage the situation initially and to then take more concrete steps tailored to the situation at hand," she says.
She tells CNBC that an outside audit helps companies in crisis situations "establish credibility."
