Overview
David O’Sullivan, former European Union ambassador to the United States, was quoted by several media outlets who sought his perspectives in advance of the US-EU Summit.
Regarding the allies’ approach to China, O’Sullivan discussed the Biden administration’s emphasis on a recommitment to multilateralism, stymied recently by Congress’s passage of a bill aimed at investing billions in US industry and research in an effort to out-compete China.
"On China, I would say, that we are hoping that the United States will take a more nuanced approach because we feel that the risk – particularly of the policies being pursued by the previous administration – was of a confrontation and a decoupling. Trying to cut China out of the international system," says O’Sullivan. "We don’t think that’s credible or reasonable. It’s not going to happen."
