Steptoe partner Amanda Varma was cited throughout an MNE Tax article titled “2016 US Model Tax Treaty Differs Markedly From Draft Version, Practitioners Say.” The article, published February 18, discusses significant updates to the draft US model tax treaty that the US Treasury released last May.
Ms. Varma commends Treasury for first releasing the update in draft form for public comment and also for taking into account taxpayers’ concerns in the final model. She says that many of the changes provide more certainty to taxpayers and reduce the likelihood of disputes. Ms. Varma adds that modifications made to a draft provision on ‘subsequent changes in law’ are an example of how Treasury improved the draft in response to taxpayer concerns.
