Overview
(March 28, 2016, New York) — Steptoe & Johnson LLP is pleased to announce that Beth D. Tractenberg, a partner in the firm’s New York office and the leader of its private client practice, has been named to The National Law Journal’s inaugural list of Trailblazers in Divorce, Trusts & Estates. The list was featured in a supplement in the March 21 issue of the legal publication.
Ms. Tractenberg concentrates her practice on all aspects of personal representation of high net worth individuals and families, as well as representation of fiduciaries. She has a particular focus on international and domestic estate planning, contested matters, and the creation and advising of exempt organizations. Ms. Tractenberg provides comprehensive tax, personal, and business advice to families, working closely with their family offices and other advisers.
Ms. Tractenberg's clients own significant real estate and business holdings in the United States and abroad. Drawing on her tax and trusts and estates experience, she serves as personal and family adviser on numerous business, management, and related personal issues for her clients. She has particular experience advising international clients as to cross-border and pre-immigration planning, gifting, estate planning, and other tax issues. Ms. Tractenberg frequently assists in resolving business disputes and succession planning across generations of family members. Ms. Tractenberg also counsels private equity and hedge fund managers on their estate planning issues and has significant experience counseling clients on estate planning opportunities that arise in connection with both the formation and sale of closely held businesses.
As Ms. Tractenberg states in her National Law Journal profile, the international trusts and estates practice is becoming more important because people are so mobile. In addition, European reporting standards are becoming more onerous than the United States reporting requirements.
Ms. Tractenberg remarks: “I have seen non-US people now actually looking to invest in the United States as a ‘tax haven.’ Knowing the rules so that foreign assets can be tax-effectively invested in the US is critically important.”
Ms. Tractenberg has been recognized in New York Super Lawyers every year since 2006. She serves on the International Estate and Planning and Asset Protection committees of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.
