Overview
(April 16, 2025, New York) — Steptoe LLP further expands its Investigations and White-Collar Defense practice with the addition of Ross Weingarten, who most recently served as an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the District of Connecticut. Ross joins Steptoe as a partner in its New York office.
An experienced trial lawyer, Ross joins Steptoe after completing his government service with a substantial trial win. Over his career, he has investigated and prosecuted fraud cases involving accounting, investors healthcare, and has charged defendants with corruption, insider trading, market manipulation, and money laundering. In addition, Ross has investigated fraud schemes in Silicon Valley involving digital assets and artificial intelligence.
"Ross is a tremendous addition to our white-collar team. His background as a former prosecutor and the scope of his litigation experience in significant fraud cases are a great complement to Steptoe’s Investigations and White-Collar team. I am delighted to welcome Ross to Steptoe," said firm chair Gwen Renigar.
The addition follows another group of recent high-profile hires by Steptoe in its expanding Investigations and White-Collar Defense group, including Claire Rajan from A&O Shearman, Jonathan Drimmer, business and human rights, and anti-corruption lawyer from Paul Hastings, Yousuf Aftab, a global leader in business and human rights law, Timothy Dickinson, a professor and practitioner in global investigations and compliance, and Sandra Hanna, a renowned leader in securities enforcement and defense.
"Steptoe has one of the most accomplished and skilled groups of litigators, and is a great platform as I look to expand my practice to represent individuals, corporations, and financial services institutions in white-collar criminal and regulatory and enforcement investigations," said Weingarten. "I'm excited to grow with such a tremendous team."
Steptoe's award-winning Investigations and White-Collar Defense group is well-known for handling some of the most significant and complex matters. These include securing a complete defense acquittal for former Autonomy CEO Mike Lynch after an 11-week securities and accounting fraud trial in San Francisco related to HP's $11.7 billion acquisition of Autonomy in 2011, and representing Volkswagen AG in a diesel emissions case.
Ross clerked for the Honorable Amit Mehta of the US District Court for the District of Columbia.
He earned his JD in 2013 from the University of Texas School of Law and his BA in 2007 from Vassar College.
