Senate Democrats Introduce Legislation to Remove Gender-Specific References to Marriage in the Tax Code: Today, the Senate Democratic Caucus announced the Equal Dignity for Married Taxpayers Act, S. 1715, which would “protect[] LGBTQ Americans from inequality and discrimination by removing gender-specific references to marriage in the tax code.”
IRS Extends Voluntary Information Reporting By Issuers of Catastrophic Health Plans: Today, the IRS issued Notice 2017-41, which provides for voluntary information reporting on minimum essential coverage under a catastrophic plan. Guidance for 2015 and 2016 set forth that health insurance issuers could voluntarily, but were not required to, report coverage under a catastrophic plan enrolled in through an exchange. This notice extends the guidance to 2017 coverage, whereby issuers may report 2017 coverage under a catastrophic plan enrolled in through an exchange. As this reporting is voluntary, issuers reporting coverage under catastrophic plan are not subject to information reporting penalties for returns and statements filed pursuant to this notice
