Overview
(March 1, 2022, Washington DC) – On March 1, Brian M. Heberlig, co-chair of Steptoe's Investigations and White-Collar Defense group and a member of the firm's Executive Committee, appeared on the podcast For the Defense, which features interviews of defense attorneys discussing their most fascinating trials. In this episode, Heberlig sat down with host David Oscar Markus at his White Collar Law seminar at the University of Miami School of Law to discuss the trial of businessman Ali Sadr, a criminal Iran sanctions case tried in the Southern District of New York, resulting in a rare post-trial dismissal with prejudice following the revelation of prosecutorial misconduct.
In reference to the case, Heberlig told For the Defense, upon learning that the government intended to dismiss the case, "on the one hand, I was overjoyed for the outcome for my client, but on the other, I thought. . . what else must be out there to cause to government to do this." Heberlig discussed with Markus the shocking disclosures that followed, leading to two lengthy court opinions detailing the prosecutorial misconduct.
Heberlig is a first-chair white-collar criminal defense lawyer with more than 20 years of jury trial experience in complex, high-profile criminal cases nationwide. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a two-time winner of The American Lawyer Litigator of the Week. He is described in Chambers USA as a "revered member of the DC trial bar" who is "extremely detail-oriented, strategic and very skilled" in the courtroom.
