Overview
(November 9, 2020, Washington, DC) — Steptoe has been named a Diversity & Flexibility Alliance 2020 "Tipping the Scales" firm for having 50% or more women in its US-based new partner class. Steptoe was recognized during the Diversity and Flexibility Alliance's annual conference on November 5 and identified in the Diversity & Flexibility Alliance's New Partner Report, a compilation of public data released each year for the past nine years.
The Diversity & Flexibility Alliance's New Partner Report is a yearly compilation of data from more than 100 of the nation's largest and top-grossing law firms examining the gender breakdown of attorneys promoted to partnership in their US offices. The data is based upon publicly available firm announcements and other self-reported sources on new partner classes with an effective date of promotion between October 1, 2019 and September 30, 2020.
The Diversity and Flexibility Alliance is a think tank that collaborates with organizations to develop non-stigmatized flexible work policies that promote inclusive work cultures and help to advance more women into leadership positions. The alliance provides practical research-based solutions, training workshops, and strategic advisory services that increase organizational effectiveness through diversity and flexibility.
Steptoe has a strong track record of supporting women lawyers. Over the past five years, women have comprised an average of 60% of the new partner classes. Additionally, many women serve in leadership positions. The firm's vice chair and general counsel is a woman, a number of the firm's practice departments and management teams are headed by women, and five of the firm's nine offices are led or co-led by women.
Earlier this year, Steptoe was recognized in The American Lawyer's A-List survey for having a large proportion of women in its equity partnership. In October, the firm was named to Law360's "Ceiling Smashers" list recognizing the law firms that have the highest representation of women in equity partnerships.
Steptoe has repeatedly been named to Working Mother magazine's annual list of the "Best Law Firms for Women" as well as the Women in Law Empowerment Forum's (WILEF) Gold Standard Certification list.
