Overview
(July 8, 2016, Washington, DC) — Steptoe partner Brigida Benitez has been elected to the American Law Institute (ALI), an independent organization in the United States “producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize, and otherwise improve the law.” To further its law reform work, the ALI elects individuals who reflect the excellence and diversity of today's legal profession.
The election of an individual begins with a confidential nomination by an ALI member that is supported by two additional ALI members. Members are encouraged to propose individuals who have demonstrated excellence in the law, are of high character, will contribute to the work of the Institute, and are committed to its mission.
The ALI’s elected membership consists of judges, lawyers, and law professors from all across the United States and from many other countries, selected on the basis of professional achievement and demonstrated interest in improving the law.
At Steptoe, Ms. Benitez focuses on complex litigation, global anti-corruption matters, and internal investigations. She has litigated cases in federal and state trial and appellate courts throughout the country, including the US Supreme Court.
Ms. Benitez is the immediate past president of the DC Bar, the second largest unified bar in the country, with more than 100,000 members worldwide. Ms. Benitez serves as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center, where she teaches a course on international business litigation and federal practice. She has been recognized by Hispanic Business magazine as a “Woman of the Year” and one of the “100 most influential US Hispanics,” and by Latino Leaders magazine as one of the “25 Most Influential Hispanic Lawyers.”
