On October 17, 2022, Tax Notes quoted Caitlin Tharp in a piece titled "Ex-IRS Official Predicts Rapid Benefits From IT Upgrades.” The piece discusses the IRS’ plan to modernize its enforcements activities through improved IT projects.
In regards to how the IRS currently uses its resources, Tharp said, “The IRS uses data analytics to examine the ‘vast array’ of taxpayer data it receives, which it uses to identify trends or discrepancies that suggest fraud or errors… For large companies, the IRS can analyze public filings and compare that to what’s reported on tax returns to identify discrepancies.”
