On July 11, 2023 Tax Notes quoted Caitlin Tharp in a piece titled,” IRS Seeks Outside Help in Applying Big Data.” The piece discusses the IRS’ request for information on how they can use big data to address noncompliance.
Caitlin provided her point of view on the request for information stating that the IRS is “acknowledging that they don’t have as many resources for audit and for compliance, both with selecting which taxpayers to audit and then following through on identifying issues. The IRS is clearly trying to solve that shortfall by looking into data analytics to figure out which returns should be selected for audit and to identify emerging issues while conserving its scarce human resources.”
She also gave insight that the IRS has already been using data analytics but they are trying to expand their efforts.
