Overview
Steptoe’s Hong Kong office is featured in a February 10 article in The American Lawyer titled "How Steptoe's Year-Old Hong Kong Office Flourished in Unprecedented Times." The article analyzes how Steptoe found early success in Hong Kong during a year when a deadly global pandemic and regulatory volatility ravaged transactions.
Steptoe officially opened its Hong Kong office in early 2020 following the arrival of office managing partner Wendy Wysong and her team. The profile attributes Steptoe’s success in the market to Wysong and her team’s focus on US export controls and sanctions enforcement, an area that has high demand and low supply in Hong Kong.
Steptoe entered Hong Kong as the city was rising to the forefront of US-China tensions, with the Trump administration rapidly unveiling numerous significant measures.
"It was just so fast-paced. We had some clients that are right on top of all the developments, so they have been asking for incredibly sophisticated analyses, while other clients were just trying to get a basic understanding of these changes," Wysong says.
Steptoe's Hong Kong office is the firm's second office in Asia. Its Beijing office marked its 10th anniversary in 2020.
