Overview
On October 24, 2022, Human Rights Magazine published an article by Jason Abel titled "This Election Is Too Important." The article begins with a fictional story to portray the obstacles to voting, and then transitions to analyze the state of voting rights in the United States in 2022. Abel then examines Supreme Court decisions on election law, and comments on Merrill v. Milligan and Moore v. Harper. Throughout the article, Abel outlines the consequences of various state laws restricting the franchise and their specific impact on Black, Latino and Native American communities.
In the piece, Abel writes: "While the challenges seem insurmountable, Congress does have the power to fix what was shattered and prevent further harm… Ultimately, and somewhat ironically, the ability to fix our elections may depend on the results of our elections. Because, as our hero in the fictional story believed, "This election is too important."
