People want to work for and buy from "good" companies making "good" products. In fact, 66% of people in America believe companies are most responsible – more so than governments or individuals – for making a positive impact on the environment. And they’ll feel better about you if you tell them what you’re doing: 58% of people in America say their opinion of a company would improve if they knew it was a leader in GHG emissions reduction, while only 9% said their opinion would decrease. But, as companies are getting "out there" with their stories and messages, rampant greenwashing is occurring – and class action lawsuits are on the rise.
So, as you ramp-up your sustainability/ESG reporting and communications efforts:
- Are you aware of the risks associated with how you tell your company's story and the associated "claims" when highlighting accomplishments?
- Do you have the right process, systems, and support in place to avoid the unnecessary risks associated with greenwashing so you can avoid greenhushing?
- Have you involved experts in reviewing your sustainability/ESG report to avoid litigation and protect your company’s reputation?
To learn more, join us on Wednesday, October 25, for an engaging discussion with Steptoe partners Eric Berman and Liz Cassady along with ERM senior partners Suzanne Shelton and Margie Flynn. Together they will highlight our latest global consumer insights – illuminating what people expect and want to hear from you – review some recent greenwashing/greenhushing cases, and provide actionable guidance on how to minimize risk and derive the greatest value from your sustainability report and sustainability communications efforts.
