Overview
Zachary Schreiber's practice focuses on a wide range of complex commercial litigation in state and federal court, including contract disputes, class actions, and professional liability matters. He is well-versed in all aspects of discovery, with extensive experience managing e-discovery, handling fact development and analysis, and preparing evidentiary and dispositive motions in highly complex matters. He has prepared numerous witnesses for deposition and trial testimony and has conducted direct and cross-examination of witnesses. Zachary has particular experience with handling class actions involving data breach and data privacy issues, including claims brought under Illinois' Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA). He also regularly counsels clients on compliance with various data privacy laws.
Zachary is active in Steptoe's pro bono practice. As part of the firm's support for the Legal Aid Landlord Tenant Right to Counsel initiative, he mediated a landlord-tenant eviction proceeding and not only kept his client in her home, but also secured her significant monetary relief. Similarly, he examined witnesses at a Bell Hearing to secure a reduced protective order payment for the duration of the litigation.

Representative Matters
- Defending multiple companies against class action lawsuits alleging violations of Illinois' BIPA.
- Defending education technology company against multiple class action lawsuits alleging a failure to adequately protect data led to exposure of personal information in a data breach.
- Defended an AmLaw100 firm against claims of fraud and negligent misrepresentation arising from the securities, pension, and tax law advice and assistance provided to clients engaged in complex structured finance transactions in foreign markets.
- Defended an AmLaw100 firm against claims of professional malpractice arising from a Foreign Corrupt Practices Act investigation conducted on behalf of a former client of the law firm.
- Defended operator of a crude-by-rail transloading facility from fraudulent inducement and breach of contract claims concerning take-or-pay contract.
- Represented a reinsurance company in arbitration against its cedent for violating the duty of utmost good faith and gratuitously damaging the value of the policies ceded.
- Represented corporate executive in numerous securities, class action, and derivative proceedings in state and federal courts.
