Overview
Global Competition Review quoted partner Ronan Scanlan in an article titled, "CMA targets Google in first DMCC investigation." The article discusses the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) first investigation under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act, targeting Google's online search and advertising services. The CMA aims to determine if Google holds strategic market status and, if so, to impose regulation overseen by its Digital Markets Unit.
Speaking to Global Competition Review about the investigation, Scanlan said that the UK government has made it "patently clear" that any intervention by the CMA should be pro-growth. Meanwhile, the incoming Trump administration will not be shy about "crying foul" if the regime unfairly targets the US tech giants.
"To make a success of this investigation – and any others – the CMA needs champions and cheerleaders from the smaller businesses community – preferably based in the UK – to tell it why its interventions will help those businesses grow," he said.
